Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club America 2023,#.

Judge Peter Clifton.

More main winners photos at the end,

After seventy years dedicated to the breed, it was a privilege to be asked by the CWCCA for my name to go to ballot for this the 80th anniversary national. I feel honoured to you, the membership, for your trust in selecting me to be your judge.

In 1975 when I first judged in America doing the sweepstakes with the U.K first lady of the breed Miss Sonnica Godden judging breed. Since then, I have judged many times in your country, and it became my second home and one that I always feel extremely sad to leave.

Its twenty-five years since I last judged your national, I have seen many changes since that time and even more when going back to 1975.

When judging I always hope to give the top honours to exhibits of such quality that I would consider handling and certainly this year, this was the case. Plus, I found a number of others whose time will certainly come.

The standard of class males improved beyond compared to my entry in 1997, and class females I felt had even more depth of quality. In breed, the competition was, I felt, stronger in bitches and the veterans, once again proving what a lasting breed we have.

Finally thank you all for your sportsmanship both to me and your fellow exhibitors in the ring.

Best of Breed

GCH Aurigan Reallife Shelby. This outstanding Cardigan would stand her ground in any country, in any era. She does have the U.K look and style of the Baileswood, Ringinglow and Joseter all combined into one. Wonderful head of correct proportions, good underjaw and foreface chiselling, eyes with defined corners, correct ears all giving a most wonderful expression. Strong reach of neck with perfectly curved lines into body. Overall body balance excellent and likewise topline standing/moving short loin, croup, and set of tail. Hindquarters spot on for angulation and muscle tone.

The forequarters should be the dream of us all viewed from side or front, everything fitting to perfection. Classic breed movement, and to top it all a great showgirl and worthy national winner that I wish was mine.

Best Of Winners.

from the Open Bitch Class

Kipperton Cheri Cheri Lady HT. My choice from the two winners was not difficult. While both are shining examples of the breed the bitch winner at two and half years old looks, and is, the finished quality article, over the raw and correctly so puppy dog. The biggest compliment I can pay both is that I would walk in the ring with you tomorrow.

Best of Best Opposite Sex to the Best of Breed

GCH Glasshouse Big Talking Man Of Geran’s.

Four-year-old old mature male in excellent condition. All male head with soft expression, not overdone in any way. Very correct for overall balance, great reach of neck curving line into body of correct shape and depth. Level topline standing and held on the move finished off with correct croup and tail set. Hindquarters had good muscle tone and angulation. Forequarters not overdone in any way; he has nice shoulder placement, tight elbows correct bone, and tight, round, arched feet. Front not narrow or wide-standing or on the move and does have the correct bow in forearm for the forequarters to fit without showing daylight. Another I would be pleased to be on the end of the lead with.

Select Dog

GCH Cosmopolitan’s Just You Wait. This three-year-old certainly not flashy, but he is so very honest in all departments. When he stands himself up to perfection he does have that extra special look of pure quality, portraying excellent overall balance and breed type. Lovely head piece without coarseness, nice eye and ear size and expression. Very true forequarters, tight elbow, curve of forearm, and correct body shape that fills front perfectly. Correct reach of neck to fit overall balance, spot on topline at all times, excellent rear and muscle. Moved so very true from rear, front and side without any exaggeration. Must admit this lad is one of two blues over the show I would have loved to have been on the end of the lead of.

Select Bitch

GCHB Madegann’s Espresso Luv DCAT TKN. Four-year-old so full of quality, not overdone in any way. Very clean lines showing excellent overall balance and perfect maturity. Very appealing head and feminine expression and like all above, forequarters that are, or should, be the hallmark of the breed. Very correct movement rear, front, and side and done at a speed that suited, making her look the perfect picture at all times.

This final top five placements gave me great pleasure in finding top spot exhibits that I would take on. Congratulations to all.

6-9 Puppy Dogs

1st - Oak Leaf Redbud Movin Me Down The Highway. Most pleasing youngster with excellent outline and overall balance. Head balanced with correct eye, ear size and shape. Neck gently running into withers, level topline correct croup and tail set. Correct rear and front assembly, correct for bone, tight feet.

2nd - Vestavia James St John Smith at Mockingbird. Another very promising quality puppy with nice fore and rear quarters thus providing excellent outline and balance. Nice bone, feet, and movement. On the day I just preferred the overall head of winner.

3rd - Ula Mauna Dark Sky At FLF. Nice mature puppy with nice forequarters, correct neck and overall balance but just needs to firm up a tad in topline. At this stage, a shade long in foreface which spoils head balance. Lovely large, correctly shaped ears.

4th - Telltail Onalee The Sandman, Nicely presented and well bodied baby; like third just a tad long in foreface and I would like a slightly larger ear. Very nice in side profile for balance and breed type. Elbows tight, correct for bone and feet. Moved true but just needed that little more confidence that should come.

9-12 Dogs

1st - Shelshire’s Don’t Fly The Coop. Winners Dog. Most impressive 9-month-old with super balanced head piece correct rise at stop, excellent shaped eye, correct doming above a flat sloping skull. Correct ear set and shape with the whole head presenting a very true Cardigan head piece picture. Ample neck for overall balance, correct body shape, short loin strong angulated rear quarters. Excellent front, elbows tight with correct line upwards from point of elbow leaving the body in the correct area. Nice for bone, tight feet; body drops nicely into curve of forearm. Covers the ground with ease moving very true at all times. Extra puppy coat on rump does give the appearance of a square rear end, which it most certainly is not. Was pleased to give this very happy puppy winners dog.

2nd - Snapdragon Fable’s Lionheart. Larger than winner with nice overall outline but for the perfect overall balance he now needs to mature more in body, which will come with time. Very attractive head and expression, well-fitted neck, nice topline, croup and rear angulation. Pleasing front, tight elbows correct for bone and feet. Covers ground fore and rear with ease.

3rd - Heulwen Music Man. Ample neck for size and fits well into withers. Would like a shade more length of back. While he moved true, I hope he will develop just a shade more rear drive.

4th - Redbud’s Cardiridge A Walk In The Park. So much to like about this young boy, overall balance, bone and feet. Pleasing in head and expression, nice muscle tone and covers the ground with ease. He was allowed to stand with more turn of foot than I would like at this age.

12-15 Dogs

1st - Cardiridge Tail Of Two Dragons. Liked very much the balanced outline and shape. Attractive in head and expression, nice body condition and presentation and covers the ground with ease. On the day, he won this class with a little in hand and needs now just to develop more in depth of body which will come with time.

2nd - Tailwind Pecan Valley the Night Watch. Good overall outline and balance. For me, a shade too much turn of foot which does spoil his front appearance both standing and on the move.

3rd - Calathea’s River Of Love. Like second, I felt this one also does have two much turn which again spoils the whole appearance standing and moving. He does have great neck length, along with plenty of body length, tad long in loin and today rode up on rear while moving.

    1. Dogs

1st - Phi-Cub Run Life On Mars TKN. Impressive youngster that stood out. Superb lines, curves, outline, and balance. Excellent head and expression, neck runs smoothly into withers, correct for body shape, topline, croup, loin and coat length. Excellent rear and front and can certainly move with drive. For me, the only thing he lacks is showmanship and I for one would like to see him place stood (hand-stacked) and saying here I am.

2nd - Salty Creek’s But Why Is The Rum Gone. Liked the overall outline, a shade more coat than winner. Pleasing head proportions, nice eye and correct stop. Nice for body shape, length and loin, well angulated rear quarters. Pleasing forequarters. tight elbows nice for bone and feet. Moved true front, side and rear and nicely presented.

3rd - Arylans Always Gallivanting. Lacked the head quality of those above with eye shape spoiling expression. Viewed from the front, good bone and legs fitting nicely around egg shaped body. In side profile, the line from point of elbow upwards comes out the back of skull spoiling the complete outline.

4th - Laughing Dawg Dreamworld’s Heartthrob. Longer in foreface than those above, correct eye and ear shape. Ample neck for overall balance, topline level, correct croup and tail set. Nice for rear and fore quarters. Would have liked a tighter foot.

Amateur Owner Handler

1st - Mylyn Karina Auroral Birkeland Current. Presented in excellent body and coat condition. Nice all male head and expression, nice length to high and tail set. Tight elbows good bone and feet. While standing alone this exhibit was well worth first place.

BBE Puppy

1st - Kingsbury Bossis Gentleman Caller. Reserve winners’ dog. 9-months-old; attractive, all male; balanced head, correct eye and ear shape thus the whole head gives a true Cardi expression. Nice side outline, balance tail set and angulated hindquarters, Excellent shoulders, tight elbows, well boned for size, correct feet. Still carrying heavy acceptable puppy coat which does make this boy look a shade heavier than he really his. Moves very true front and rear but would like a shade more effort. Presented in excellent condition and handled with softness and understanding.

2nd - Ebonwald’s Extra Addition. Very attractive 6-month-old and, like winner, most pleasing head and expression. Lovely front and forechest when viewed from side and front, tight elbows. Correct bone tight feet. Ample neck for overall balance, level topline, correct croup, and angulated muscled hindquarters. Moves true front rear and side. Pushed winner hard.

3rd - Heulwen Notorious. 9 months old; presented in excellent all-round condition and handled with softness and understanding. Excellent eye and ears, correct rise of skull but a tad full in foreface at this stage. Most pleasing front assembly, well boned tight feet, rear quarters nicely angulated, just needs to cover ground with more drive but not more speed.

4th - Tailwind Pecan Valley Night Sky. 6 months old; promising baby, nice for overall balance, firm hindquarters. Head a shade long in foreface for true head balance at this age, nice eye and ear shape and size. Another that moves very true.

BBE Adult

1st - Wonderland Telltail Back to the Future. So much to like about this 20-month-old youngster. Very nice for outline and overall balance. Pleasing head and expression, correct shoulders, front, bone, and feet. Level firm topline, correct croup and tail set. Hind quarters nicely angulated, would like to see a shade more drive in movement.

2nd - Mirage The Whole Enchilada. Head looking 3 to 5 but eye a shade bold, which did spoil expression. Nice shoulders, bone, tight elbows, feet. Body fitting nicely into curve of forearm with good forechest and depth of body. Like winner would like a shade more rear drive.

3rd - Harmony’s The Winner Takes It All. Balanced appealing head, correct eye and ear shape, all giving that wonderful Cardi expression. Overall balance good, firm topline at all times, nice for croup, tail set and rear angulation. On the day preferred overall front of winners, may be due to the way he was allowed to stand.

4th - Sanddigger Puddleduck Fused In Admantium. Mature 4-year-old with pleasing overall body shape and balance. Firm topline short in loin. Rear quarters well angulated. Pleasing head, alert expression at all times. Like third he was allowed to stand to what I felt did this front construction little justice.

Am Bred

1st - Wonderland Telltail Made In America. Nice honest dog that covered the ground with ease. Kind eyes, watchful expression, and excellent shape. A shade blunt in foreface. Ample neck, nice forechest and front construction, tight elbows strong bone, tidy feet. Nice body shape with short loin, correct croup, and tail set. Well angulated and muscled hind quarters.

2nd - Taelormaed I Did It My Way. So much to like about this lad, but sadly he failed to show his qualities off. Super head all round with great expression. Nice length, loin, croup and tail set, firm angulated quarters. Nice bone and tight well shaped feet. Allowed to lose topline both standing and, on the move. Covers the ground with ease.

3rd - Sanddigger PD You Can Crash My Party Anytime. Strong bone, tight feet. Liked him for his length to height, croup, tail set and hindquarters. Like second, allowed to lose topline.

4th - Glasshouse Fantasies and Delusions. Shade finer than those above both head and body. Well-shaped body, strong quarters.

Open Dogs

1st - Winbucks SilverFern Double Oh Seven. Impressive 2-year-old with lovely side outline and overall balance for age. Masculine head, correct eye, ear shape and true Cardigan expression. Ample neck that runs smoothly into withers, correct topline standing and on the move. Strong, well angulated rear quarters. Nice body shape, good forechest, tight elbows with line running up into withers.

2nd - Raconteur Magic Is Brewing HSAs BN RI SWN CGC TKA. Felt winner just had the edge in head quality over this 4-year-old. Pleased with overall balance and body shape, muscled, angulated quarters, nice bone and feet, firm shoulders, tight elbows, good forechest. Moved true with drive.

3rd - Phi-Cub Run Astral Symphony. Flashy 16-month-old with super clean outline. Lovely head all round with great expression. Great length of neck in fitting with overall balance, correct topline body shape croup and tail set. Hindquarters correctly angulated well-muscled for age. Excellent for bone and foot shape with body fitting nicely into curve of forearm. Still immature and needs to learn more ring craft but timed on his side, Covers ground with ease.

4th - Arylans Mint Condition. Presented in excellent condition. Would like a shade more rise from foreface to skull, otherwise head in keeping with breed. Nice shape of body and forechest, balanced high to length, nice front movement.

Bitches

Very strong classes from which I felt I had four class winners in contention for the top spot of Winners Bitch.

6-9 Puppy Bitches

1st - Onalee Telltail Dark Star At Redbud. Most pleasing 6-month-old baby, most appealing feminine head, nice underjaw, correct eye shape and size, and with nice ear placement thus all giving this young lady a very nice expression. Most pleasing front assembly, neck runs smoothly into withers, nice body shape, short loin, topline, croup, tail set and rear quarters. Very settled standing and moved covering the ground with reach and drive for one so young.

2nd - Vestavia Much and More. 7-month-old tri with most attractive head and expression. Her handler’s presentation finding the correct neck position helped show off her super side outline, balance, and front quality. Nice for body shape, depth for age; short loin. Strong nicely angulated rear quarters. Moved covering the ground with effortless ease.

3rd - Targes All or Nothin. 6-month-old showing plenty of underneath daylight acceptable for age. Feminine head of nice balance, large ears, excellent expression. Nice length of neck, topline, croup and tail set. Moved and showed with confidence which got her into third.

4th - Kipperton Symphony No 9 The Great. So much to like about this six-month-old baby. She does need more confidence plus help from her handler to show her many qualities, and after taking this into consideration I felt she well deserved her place in the ribbons. Pleasing head. Correct reach of neck that fits nicely into body which is good overall balance. Very nice front construction, bone, and tight rounded feet. Very nice front movement.

9-12 Puppy Bitches

1st - Hope On Hold Your Applause for Tailwind. This blue lady took my eye on entering the ring with super outline and overall balance. Did not disappoint on examination with feminine head and expression; excels in neck placement, topline standing/moving, correct loin, croup, and tail set. Well-angulated hindquarters, correct in body shape, forechest, shoulders, and elbows tight, excellent bone and feet and to top all moved with purpose and freedom.

2nd - Sunkissed Pecan Valley Tempest. Appeals in head and expression, does have ample neck, correct body shape and good overall balance. Does tend to be stood in a manner that spoils her side profile making her look upright in shoulder and lacking forechest. Viewed from the front, correct body shape fits nicely into forequarters with tight fitted elbows. Lost to winner on maturity and excellent scoring on movement.

3rd - Sunkissed Tri For The Sky. Nice eye, correct ear size, shape and set. Good head balance with excellent feminine expression. Front view shows correct body shape, excellent bone, and tight correctly-shaped feet. In side profile, while I feel she is balanced she does, like second, stand to be stood giving a false impression of her forequarters. Nice body depth for age and excellent front movement coming and going away.

4th - Wonderland Telltail Pardon My French. Attractive head and expression, loads of neck that curves nicely into withers, strong level topline and angulated rear quarters. Nice for body shape, forechest, and overall front, be it viewed from front or side. On the day, very little to choose from between third and fourth.

12-15 Bitches

1st - Cardiridge Cleopatra Nicely. Constructed with good overall balance. Pleasing head and expression, great neck curving nicely into withers, level topline standing/moving, correct for body shape and length of loin, and correct tail set. Strong rear quarters, very nice forequarters, bone and feet. Would like just a shade more depth of body from her side. Movement free and active.

2nd - Westwinds Not Everyone Enjoys A Fool CGC. Attractive feminine head, nice for underjaw, eye and ear shape, correct size all giving a most true Cardi expression. Heavy in body to winner which spoils overall balance. On the day lost out to winner in forequarter and movement.

3rd - Calathea’s Princess Jade Of Good Fortune. Nice clean lines, pleasing head, ears of correct size and well set, all giving a sweet expression. Ample neck for overall balance, strong muscled hindquarters, well-boned but does tend to stand looking upright in shoulder. While she moves true, would like more drive.

4th - Arbennig Keep Your Heels High. Appealing youngster who needs more time to mature. Nice for outline, lost out to third on head and expression. This exhibit is another that stands not doing her front justice when viewed from side and front.

15-18 Bitches

1st - Serenci Counting On A Miracle CGC TKI. This young lady appeals for breed type. Super outline with perfect clean lines. Feminine head, super expression, nice reach of neck curves perfectly into level topline; excellent body shape, short loin, correct croup and tail set. Excels in hind and forequarters. Moves true front/rear/side. A very honest young lady.

2nd - Laughing Dawg Dreamworld Joyful Heart. Another most appealing youngster with lovely, clean outline and ring presence. Liked her feminine head piece, large ears, and expression. Super neck that fits overall balance perfectly, excels in topline standing/moving. Correct shoulders, body shape, and does have close fitting elbows. Presented in excellent body condition and moved with drive and very true. A close call between one and two but on the day, I felt the winner just won on fronts.

3rd - Bluefox Up To No Good CGC. Interesting youngster with correct topline and tail set. Needs to mature more in body for perfect overall balance, Head three to five, correct ears. Nice shoulders with tight elbows; did tend to stand wide in front.

4th - Laughing Dawg Dreamworld’s Fern Gully. Finer in foreface that those above and lost out a shade in overall front construction. Nice balance and clean outline. Scored in rear movement and does have a nice ring attitude.

AOH Bitches

1st - Cadnoclun’s Runnin’ Down A Dream. Presented in excellent coat and body condition. Nice for head and expression with reach of neck that does balance with her length and height. Strong rear, nice for forechest but does tend to stand a shade wide in front. Moves with freedom which won her place.

2nd - Sanddigger Pd The Party Don’T Start Till I Walk In. Like winner, also presented in excellent condition and in tune with handler. Pretty head, correct ear set and expression. Does tend to stand looking upright in shoulder, strong well-muscled hind quarters. Just preferred winners overall front and movement.

BBE Puppy Bitches Excellent class with other quality youngsters not in the awards

1st - Kingsbury Bossis Some Like IT Hot. Certainly red hot when it comes to quality and breed type. Very feminine head piece all due to correct dimensions, correct in underjaw, rise of stop eye and ear shape, and correct in skull. Her neck runs smoothly into withers; super topline, held at all times nice croup and tail set. Excels in front, lovely tight elbows with a straight line when standing from point of elbow upwards via withers. Correct bone and feet cover the ground with total ease and freedom. Reserve Winners Bitch and litter sister to my Reserve Winners Dog. Today losing the winners bitch top spot to another quality more mature bitch that’s approaching her prime at 2.5 years old.

2nd - Wellshire Diamond Girl. While the winner maybe hot, this lady, like her name, is quite a diamond; beautifully presented and in excellent condition. Very appealing in side and front profile with super overall balance, excellent correctly angulated hindquarters with good muscle tone. Just like winner, excels in front and same comments apply. Another lovely head piece with correct eye shape that contributes so much to true breed expression. Moved to perfection.

3rd - Oak Leaf Redbud Time in a Bottle. Loved her for overall balance, curving lines, “look at me” attitude and breed type. Head of correct dimensions, well set ears of good size but preferred eyes of winners. Just like both above she excels in front and moves very true (side, front, and rear) with reach, drive, and freedom.

4th - Wonderland Comet Donati. Certainly not any disgrace in coming fourth to those above and I’m sure awards will change along the line. All I have said on confirmation on those above apply to this 7-month-old baby of the pack and today she rightly lacked just the maturity of those above.

BBE Adult Bitches

1st - Giant’s Dance Star Baker RN. 18-month-old with feminine head, nice eye, large ears giving true breed expression. Ample neck curving into withers, well-developed, correctly shaped body, short loin. Strong muscled hindquarters, forequarters laid back, tight elbows and ample forechest all giving a super outline from side and front. Nice bone, correctly shaped and tight feet. Liked the reach and drive of movement covering the ground with tireless ease.

2nd - Telltail’s Wonderland Show Pony. Mature three-year-old with very attractive head, nice underjaw, rise of stop, excellent eye and ear shape, thus all giving a great head expression. Like winner in neck body shape, forequarters outline side and front. Today I felt winner just had the edge on movement.

3rd - Aurigan Take A Little Piece of my Heart. Two-year-old, well mature, and smart quality red; of nice balance and outline. Ample neck, super topline standing/moving. Nice head dimensions and underjaw; would like eye to have more defined corners. Good shape and depth of body, short loin well-muscled. Very nice forequarters (side/front) and covers ground with very easy and true movement.

4th - Oak Leaf Redbud Sings So Good. Another two-year-old; lost out to above on maturity. Nice for height to length, neck, topline, angulated hindquarters. Well-fitted forequarters with ample forechest and from front the body rests nicely into curve of forearm. In side profile, I would like to see the neck reach more forward instead of looking L shaped thus giving a more balanced side profile.

American Bred Bitches

1st - Redbud’s Believer. Two-year-old; well-matured, good size ears, correct skull, eye shape, and doming above. Excels in forequarters with lines forechest to ground and point of elbow through withers an example to all on super front outline and what one should seek in presentation. Good overall balance but tail tucked under body does spoil perfect outline. Moved with drive and correct font rear and side.

2nd - Meurig Telltail Take A Chance On Me. Three-year-old; most pleasing head and expression, ample neck, and nice body lines. Nicely mature in body and presented in excellent condition. Well-muscled hindquarters that are correctly angulated. Like winner excels in forequarters despite her full dark leg marking trying to create an illusion. On the day just preferred movement of winner but pressed hard.

3rd - Vestavia Naomi at Coldstream. Another most pleasing exhibit. Smaller, but totally balanced, presenting a rather nice, clean outline. Pleasing overall head, eyes with distinct corners, well-shaped ears, and alert expression at all times. Good in all departments of forequarters. Just needs to move with a tad more drive.

4th - Cardiridge Bluejet Wild About Wildflowers HT. Very solid and mature at 18 months. Excellent body balance that projects a super outline. Correct for body shape, layback of shoulder, but was allowed to stand turning one foot slightly. Level topline to croup, good tail set, strong hindquarters. Just preferred the overall heads of those above.

Open Bitches

1st - Kipperton Cheri Cheri Lady HT. Caught my eye when I first looked around the class, and thought to myself if this girl can move then all others have trouble ahead. This nearly 2.5-year-old coming up to what I consider the start of the adult period. Most attractive head of correct proportions and rise to skull. Correct eye shape, ear size balances head, nice reach of neck that curves into withers level topline at all times, good body shape short loin and nice tail set. Powerful, angulated rear quarters. Forequarters excellent with tight elbows, super lines, making her a joy to look at in side profile. Front view shows the egg resting just like it should with everything fitting perfect. Thankfully, she could move front side and rear and it gave me great pleasure to award her Winners Bitch and later Best of Winners.

2nd - MacWallace Canon. 20-month-old; mature, pretty head with very nice expression. Excellent overall balance and outline. Ample reach of neck that runs correctly into withers, nice for body shape topline, loin and croup. Very nice shoulders, tight elbows and forechest. I felt on the day the winner had the edge on maturity and moved with more assured freedom.

3rd - Lost River’s XIV Karat On A Sugar High. Another 20-month-old but looking in today’s company more of a youngster. Shade smaller than those above but very neat and tidy. Feminine head and expression great reach of neck curving into withers, good topline. Liked her overall front construction, well-boned; tidy, tight, correctly-shaped feet. Still needs to steady and settle down a shade in movement.

4th - Windmill-Woodrose Risk Taker. This 2.5-year-old still needs to mature a fraction more in body for perfect balance. I feel she is feminine in head but a shade long in foreface. Nice eye shape with well-shaped ears. Again, another correct in the neck department, level topline to croup, muscled hindquarters. Well-developed forequarters but still needs to fill in more in front which should come with more maturity. Nice steady true movement.
