The House of Joseter Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
2020 - 2025.
Looking back at the past decade, having exhibited and judged at shows from the U.K, Europe to U.S I feel positive about the future. The U.K continues, even with small numbers holds its own with others from around the world. Europe I feel have made great strides and its top Cardigans could enter any ring with pride. Certainly a major player been the acceptance of foreign bloodlines both with chilled and frozen semen and if handled onwards selectively, more advancements will follow. With this in mind one must hope that line breeding becomes the norm rather than the pick and mix method, and the lesson of this one can find well written in the breeds history. National breed clubs within Europe must also take credit for allowing overseas breed specialists to judge national breed club specialities, giving a more diverse and valid opinion of ones countries stock, thus making us all more knowledgable and understanding breeders.
We attended just one show during the year due to everything being cancelled, including dog shows. At Crufts, Joseter Cardigans continued the kennels success by taking best of breed for the seventh consecutive year. This year was the turn of Ch Joseter Mr Parkinson who lifted the crown at eight years of age, incredibly becoming the third brother to win this award, the other two being, his litter brother Ch Joseter Mr Blobby and younger brother Ch Joseter Frazer Nash. The event was made even better when a Parkinson daughter Hundahilli Veris won her second c.c., a lovely win for newcomers to the breed.

The lockdown gave time for reflection on a lifetime in the breed. A couple of events remain clearly implanted in my mind, the first being when when Ma Powell told me at a show that she would like to have a talk with me when convenient. This took place at the very next show, she kindly told me that she felt I was in the breed for the long term and while she was not going to give me guidance should I ever need help or advice all I had to do was ask. Some years later I did ask, what if I had not returned for that talk. The reply was ''I hope you would not be a know-it-all''. The second was after an early judging appointment when I asked my Mother what she felt of my judging to which she replied, go ask someone who’s not related, which I then did, and from the given guidance my approach to judging was altered for life.
The Joseter show team at the start of 2021 consist of Ch Joseter Frazer Nash, Ch Joseter Mr Blobby, Ch Joseter Mr Parkinson, Joseter Lotti Dod, and Joseter Four Candles. We also wish others with Joseter sired puppies both at home and overseas every success.
Ch Shinnell Bee left us for America and became an American Champion for new owner and friend Kim Moshlak before spending time in the whelping box.

Mr Blobby earned his retirement from serious showing after winning the res C.C and best veteran in show at the C.W.C.A Ch show in September 2021at the age of ten years. While his many records will always live on in the breeds history it must always be remembered that the breed does have more shows, probably double the C.Cs and judges. Competition now is weak in numbers, and quality, compared to the 70/80s period thus records reflect nothing more than a number.

Frazer Nash left for Australia to live with renown breeder Susan Hadley who I have known for many years. It was not a light decision to let this top winning dog leave, and with the probability that he never be valued for stud work by British breeders, he was given the opportunity to prove his worth to the breed in Australia. To-date Frazer Nash as been accepted by Australian breeders, and judges, becoming a Grand Champion in 14 months of showing winning Best in Show all breeds plus many group wins and placings,

Shamefully The Royal Kennel Club ageism policy, refusing to appoint over 80s to judge at Crufts dog show again hit the press headlines. This in the 21st century to me is totally unacceptable and on behalf of all over eighties judges I wrote articles in Our Dogs on the subject along with contacting my member of parliament. The articals and parliamentary letters can be found on this web site under articals and films by Peter Clifton

In 2023 I was honoured for the second time ( last in 1997 ) to be voted by the American membership to judge the 80th anniversary Cardigan national speciality and received a wonderful entry. My full judges critique can be found on the web site under The Judging Years. or

For the first time in seventy four years Morgan Plus Four became only the third Cardigan in the breeds history to win three challenge certificates and becoming a champion while under the age of twelve months. The last cardigan to do this was Ch Lisaye Rebecca of Greenfarm who was the foundation Cardigan of my parents Willowbeach Kennel and she can be found in Morgans pedigree way back in the 50s.

During 2023 Joseter Willy Wonka became the latest in a long line of Joseter champions and his pedigree really does show the strength of the Joseter line. Sadly like Frazer Nash, he again will never be valued for stud by British breeders but I'm certain that once in Europe he will be given the opportunity by European breeders.

In 1951 my very dog show was Boston, and on that day I handled my very first show dog a Pembroke Corgi. Little did I imagine that 73 years later I would be judging my corgi breeds at Boston, with both breeds having obtained C.Cs for the very first time at this show.. Over the years I have seen both breeds make advancements and in some cases a step backwards. I really do feel that the Pembroke have changed far more than the Cardigan, and I do wonder if it really was intentional that some changes came to be when the standard states otherwise. In Pembroke one finds better Cardigan feet and ears than in Cardigans. Some Pembroke coats would in Cardigans be classed as fluffs. Pembroke seem to be getting longer in loin than ever and its becoming noticeable that this is now creeping into Cardigans. Exhibitors can only show what they have, breed education for breeder and judge, (specialist and all rounder) must be advanced enough to tackle undesirable traits becoming the norm. To all that supported this lovely show at Rutland water I thank each and every one of you for giving me such a wonderful entry in both breeds, I hope my full critique explains to why I did what, and this along with photos can be found at

It is not easy to say goodbye to something ones given so much to but In July 2024 after months of anguish I resigned my membership of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Ass due to the manner the Association is being managed by the committee. It is unacceptable for the committee to break the Association rules, be this by ignorance or purpose. The cost of the committees actions can now be seen in finance and entries, not just for the Association but also its reflected onto breed and general championship shows,
Correct procedure was brought to the committees attention but not put into practice. While disagreements within committees are resolved by dialogue and not public criticism of those who seek right, and to manage their removal from the committee I consider a insult to members past and present.
It can never be correct for an officer or committee member of the club to threaten a member or members, on association premises, with cancellation of the A.G.M because they had heard someone was telling others who to vote for. With that someone being myself the longest servant of the breed in the world, the allegation was outrageous, libellous, slanderous, unacceptable and without foundation.
One would hope that future committees will read and abide by the rules that be put in place to protect them and the Association membership.
One must also hope that future committees will from now on, endeavour to increase interest in the breed with friendliness, plus learn the art of brinkmanship.

It became obvious for some time that I was once again have to look overseas for a quality male who must also have the pedigree to compliment the Joseter line. When I judges the American national in 2023 I made note of several that could be of interest and after watching the video of the 2024 American national one I felt would. His pedigree was like my own having extremely strong lines with the added factor that Joseter was way back on all lines apart from one. I am extremely grateful that Cindy Forbes allowed Am Ch Wonderland Telltail Back to the Future to join us for a period, and iodate he as made quite an impression in and out of the show ring both in the U.K and Europe. He will be mated to Morgan Plus Four within the coming months and the progeny will take Joseter into the second half of the decade.
